Drama classes are offered at all 3 levels, for students to learn and explore a variety of theater skills. DCCMS is proud to put on a number of productions each year:
a fall musical,
a spring play,
and A Night of One Acts, put on by One Act and Advanced Acting students.
Students can also join Drama Club, which will give them first access to our productions and trips!
6th Grade Drama
Course length: One semester (every other day)
Prerequisite: None

In this class students will learn the basic skills necessary for exploring the art of acting. Units covered will include performance appreciation, character development, voice, movement, and scene work. These fundamental skills will build a knowledge base for other performing arts classes offered in subsequent years.
7th Grade Drama
Course length: One semester (every other day)
Prerequisite: None

In this class students will learn basic skills as they explore the art of drama. Students will work with their classmates on a daily basis to create new works of theater. Throughout the semester student will explore scene work, technical theatre, and directing.
One Act (7th Grade)
Course length: One year (every other day)
Prerequisite: Attendance at Informational Meeting and Parent permission

This drama class is meant for students who want to further explore theatre and engage with the world around them. Students in this class will work in an ensemble environment that requires them to work heavily with their peers. In the fall semester, students will work on both acting and ensemble skills as they explore scene work, and technical theatre. In the spring semester, students will apply these skills to a devised scene and a final performance. Students will select an idea or issue that exists in society, and create original theatre piece based on this central concept. Then students will put on a One-Act production of their choice. There is one required evening rehearsal and one required evening performance for this class. Please note: Students request enrollment in One Act. If there are more students interested in the course than there is space available, then students are randomly selected for participation.
8th Grade Drama
Course length: One semester (every other day)

In this class students will explore new acting techniques and the meaning of theatre around the world. This class builds on skills developed in sixth and seventh grade drama classes. Students will work with their classmates on a daily basis to create new works of theater as they explore Ancient Greek Theatre, Improv, and scene work.
Advanced Acting (8th Grade)
Course length: One year (every other day)
Prerequisite: Audition required

This class is designed for the serious drama student. Our goal of this class is to prepare students for the high school theatre experience. Theatre artists in this class will be responsible for writing, memorizing, and performing monologues and scenes. Artists will learn audition techniques and leave the class with an audition-ready monologue, and resume for future theatrical auditions. All artists in the class will practice technical theatre skills with a design project. They will explore a variety of advanced acting techniques and complete a variety of script analysis exercises. In the spring students will put on a One-Act production to showcase their skills. There is one required evening rehearsal and one required evening performance for this class.
