Colorado Springs Youth Symphony

Congratulations to Elise Witherow, William Davis and Sarah Berry who recently auditioned and were accepted into the Colorado Springs Youth Symphony! They will be performing at various local concerts throughout the 2016-2017 school year. Go, Thunder!

54th Annual Pikes Peak Regional​​ ​Young People's Art Exhibit​

Congratulations to Tanner Sukle, Riley Colby, and Annalise Brady whose artwork was selected for the 54th Annual Pikes Peak Regional Young Peoples Art Exhibition! 

This exhibition is representative of some of the best artwork being created in the region's schools and it open to the public from 10a.m. to 5p.m. in the Imagination Space at the Citadel Mall April 5th through April 11th, 2015. Imagination Space is closed on Sundays and Mondays. ​

Wild Idea Award: Tanner Sukle (8th Grade)
​Tanner's piece is a five layer painting. The first layer is based off of what students learned about Mark Rothko; the second is Op Art; the third layer is Willem de Kooning; the fourth layer is Jackson Pollock; and the fifth layer completes the piece.
2nd Place Altered Photography:  Riley Colby (8th Grade)
The photo is a photogram. To create the white splatters Riley experimented with the Fixer chemical.

 2nd Place Sculpture: Pinchpot apple created by Annalise Brady (8th Grade)
 The apple was bisque-fired, glazed, and refired. Annalise then added glass piece-by-piece and followed it with grout.

6th Grade Student Wins D20 Poster Contest​

Congratulations to Presley Sarkisian for being the first place middle school winner in District 20's second annual Earth Day Poster Contest.

Destination Imagination (DI)

IMG_0486_resized.jpgCongratulations to our both DCC Destination ImagiNation teams for making our school proud at the Pikes Peak DI Tournament on Saturday, February 27th! 

 The Elementary Team placed 2nd in the region and nailed their Instant Challenge. The Middle School Team took 1st place and received the coveted Renaissance Award for Exceptional Creativity.  

 Both DI teams are advancing to the DI State Tournament on April 9 at Auraia Campus. This is an amazing STEAM event in which students show off their creative problem-solving and teamwork skills. 

Our teams are featured in this article in the Gazette. The elementary team is in the picture, preparing to take the stage in their 1970s disco costumes, and two elementary members of the MS team are quoted in the article.

We are so proud of their amazing creativity and the countless hours of dedication that went into their medal-winning performances - go, Thunder!

Honors Orchestra

Congratulations to DCMS students, Greg, Annika, Sarah, Sejin, William, and Michael for their recent participation in Honors Orchestra! Students attended a live audition in order to qualify to participate. Our students joined other musicians who were selected from across the Pikes Peak region to participate in five rehearsals, culminating in a concert which took place on January 21, 2016.

Student Wins Writing Award 

Congratulations to ​8th grade student, Makena Likewise, for winning second place in the annual SERTOMA National Heritage Freedom Banquet essay contest! 

The contest invited students to write an essay in 400 words or less that expressed their views on “What Freedom Means to Me”.​
Makena was the 8th grade winner of the contest at DCC and went on to the next level of competition where he placed 2nd out of 14 other school winners. Participants in this competition were primarily from District 20 and District 11 in Colorado Springs.    
As the second place winner Makena received a plaque, a cash prize and a flag that was flown over our nation’s capital building.

Students Participate in Pikes Peak Honor Band

Congratulations to ​​7th grade students, Scott and Bryce who participated in the Pikes Peak Honors Band on Saturday, February 6th. Go, Thunder!

Student Gymnast

Congratulations to student, Sophie, for her recent accomplishments in gymnastics! In December 2015 Sophie participated in a Level 4 Junior Olympics competition, and won 3rd place All Around, 1st in Floor and 3rd on Vault. ​Go, Thunder!​​


Student Shout Out Board

Kudos to 6th grade student, Millie, for creating a Shout Out Board  for the girls' bathroom in the 6th/7th grade hallway. The Shout Out Board provides a place for girls to write messages of encouragement to each other. Well done, Millie! ​

Jeans for Teens Service Project

6th grade student, Connie, is starting a new service project! The project is called "Jeans for Teens." This project will begin January 21st. She will be placing boxes and signs near the attendance office, campus services and in the main hallway.  Students can bring old pairs of jeans, to school, to donate. They can place the jeans in the boxe​​s and the student will check the boxes at the end of every day. There is an organization that she will be taking the donations to on a regular basis. Please help our student in her efforts to make a difference in our community!​

Runners Compete in New Mexico

Congratulations to DCC students Morgan, Ellie, Emma, Tony, and Isaac who competed in long distance running at the Junior Olympic Championships in Albuquerque, New Mexico on December 7th -- go, Thunder!


​7th Grade Student Qualifies for World Dance Championships!

Congratulations to Catherine O'Reilly on her recent dance accolades!​

Catherine placed 13th out of 101 dancers at the Western Region Oireachtas dance compeition held in Salt Lake City, Utah on the 20th of ​​November.

Catherine also qualified to compete at the World Championships to be held in Glasgow, Scotland in March 2016, an honor for which only 10% of dancers typically qualify worldwide.

Spelling Bee Winner!

Congratulations to JJ Blandford, the winner of the DCC MS Spelling Bee, along with our other three star spellers:  Cierian Craig, Sarah Berry, and Kyra Corkill! All four students will represent DCC at the D20 Tournament in February.

8th Grade Volleyball

Congratulations ​to the 8th Grade Volleyball Team for their first place win at the Front Range Tournament -- Go, Thunder!

DCMS Robotics Teams

Congratulations to the Thunder Recycling Robots Team, coached by Brian Tichenor, who the Strategy and Innovation Trophy at the regional competition on Saturday, November 14th. 

One of the other two DCC teams, the Flying Flaming Fajitas, won the Alliance Round, which is a noncompetitive round but shows how the team does under tight deadlines.

Cross Country Winners Win First Place

Congratulations to Ellie L. (7th Grade Girls) and Emma L. (6th Grade Girls) for taking first place for their grade level at the first Cross Country meet of the season! Go, THUNDER!

DCC Students Receive Gold Medal at Hammadang, an International Taekwando Tournament​

On June 21, Meredith C., Madeline H. and Kennedy P. (5th grade) competed ​with their Demo Team at the Hanmadang, an International Taekwando Competition held at the World Arena.  Hanmadang means "festival" in Korean. Over 1,300 people competed this year.  

The girls team competed against six other teams who traveled to Colorado Springs from all over the U.S.  Their team represented the US Taekwondo Center in Monument and they took GOLD! Way to go, girls!​
